Professor Dr. Awad Abdel Jelil Abubakr Mohamed

Professor Dr. Awad Abdel Jelil Abubakr Mohamed is a prominent Sudanese academic specializing in Islamic history. He was born on October 21, 1975, in Port Sudan, Red Sea State, Sudan. He has built a long and distinguished academic career in research, teaching, and academic supervision. He earned his PhD in History with distinction from the University of the Red Sea in 2013, focusing his dissertation on the development of the relationships between the Beja tribes and the Islamic state from 20 AH/641 CE to 923 AH/1517 CE. He also holds a Master’s degree in Islamic History with very good distinction (2005) and a Bachelor’s degree with second-class honors in Geography and History from the University of Gezira (2000), reflecting his deep expertise in various historical fields.
Dr. Awad Abdel Jelil has contributed significantly to scholarly research through numerous peer-reviewed publications addressing a wide range of topics, including the history of Beja ports, the intellectual and revolutionary movements of the Kharijites during the Umayyad period, the spread of Islam and the Arabic language in Africa, and the role of Morocco in disseminating Islamic culture. He has also produced studies on the Great Fitna, the Islamic caliphate, and other historical and strategic topics, with several papers currently under preparation.
His professional experience extends to teaching and academic supervision, having served as a Teaching Assistant, Lecturer, and Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of the Red Sea. He has also held multiple administrative positions, including Acting Secretary of Scientific Affairs and Head of the History Department, contributing to the development of academic programs and organizing conferences and scientific workshops both locally and internationally. His community engagement includes participation in cultural and service committees, preparing academic guides, organizing university ceremonies, and supporting local development programs.
Dr. Awad Abdel Jelil has taught a wide array of history courses, including Ancient, Medieval, and Modern Sudanese History, Islamic History, the Umayyad and Abbasid States, the history of Africa, Europe, and Asia, the spread of Islam, research methodology and philosophy, Sudanese studies, and specialized courses on Islamic civilization. He has also participated in advanced training programs in academic supervision, positive thinking, professional development for university staff, and interactive digital content design, reflecting his continuous commitment to professional and academic growth.
